Electronics Engineer / Technical Writer / STEM Instructor
May 2020 - December 2021; July 2022 - November 2023
My first time working in the industry through co-op was as a Technical Documentation/Electronics Engineer in a startup called EIM Technology. Previous Simon Fraser University graduates founded this startup. After the end of two co-op semesters, they asked me to continue working with them part-time, and I continued working with them until November 2023, with a small break in 2022 to focus on wrapping up my final year of undergrad and Capstone.
I'm incredibly grateful for this opportunity and experience, which helped me develop professionally. I learned to embody the company’s mission statement: developing portable lab devices to make STEM education more accessible to high school and undergraduate programs.
Adaptability was the key to success in my position, as the tasks assigned significantly varied. I learned so much throughout my whole time working, from programming Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) with Verilog and VHDL to teaching high school students with EIM's Green Electrical Energy tutorials as a STEM Instructor during summer school. I also learned the process and testing required to ready consumer electronics for commercialization, where I was in charge of testing and creating reports on products' electrical characteristics. Most importantly, I learned what is needed to run a relatively new startup and how to foster meaningful collaboration with different disciplines in various roles.
